Michael Phelps Does It Again

Michael Phelps has done it again. He has earned his 7th gold medal in the Beijing Olympics by swimming one-hundredth of a second faster than Serbia's Milorad Cavic in the 100m butterfly.

He and Mark Spitz are now tied in the records for winning 7 gold medals in one Olympic game. But Michael now holds the most Olympic gold medals ever won with 13.

Can he make his 8th Beijing gold medal?

I certainly hope so. I'm praying and rooting and jumping for him. Go Phelps!

This wil be my last Phelps post...unless he wins his 8th medal!

My Halloween Costume Choice

Picking the right Halloween costumes for my two kids can be pretty exhausting. It really takes a lot of negotiating and re-negotiating just to get the right ones. Of course, I want Kuya and Kowi to have complementing costumes. But when it’s time to go costume hunting, they each have their own picks. And most of the times, the ones they choose don’t actually go together at all, or worse, they even clash!

Dressing up for Halloween is a very big deal in the family. Every year we try to vie for the coveted award of Best Costume, as chosen by my grandmother, since her birthday falls on November 1st. It’s just in time to celebrate it every year with a big costume party.

This year, I plan to dress the whole family in something matching and unique. No more dressing up like monsters, ghouls, princesses, fairies and cowboys. Those themes have been done quite a number of times by the entire family. No more recycling of costume ideas. I’m gunning to win the Best Costume.

I was surfing online and saw costumecauldron.com with Halloween costumes that might just do the trick. It has a lot of categories to choose from. I browsed through costume type, both adult and kid costumes. Then I browsed by category like TV and Movie, Dance and Holiday. I am even considering jazzing up my picked theme and glanced through accessories like makeup and masks. There is even an entire selection of props to totally get into the Halloween role. If you want to add magic tricks, juggling and even a bit of audio, you can. It’s just a click away.

In choosing the theme, there are a few things that I consider. First, it’s supposed to be original. I don’t want end up looking like a copycat to my cousin’s family wearing the same cowboy outfits! Second, I want it to be a bit quirky. To see that smile on my grandma’s face is certainly worth it. Lastly, it’s comfortable for the kids. Halloween costume safety is a priority. I don’t want them sweating in the costume or getting rashes from the fabric.

After careful consideration, I have finally made a choice. I think it is fun, quirky and complementary. The good thing is that my kids also know the characters. We have watched the DVD a lot of times over. I’m very happy to pick—drum roll please—Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

I will definitely play Willy Wonka. Kuya and Kowi are already excited about their Halloween costumes. I don’t know if Hubby is as eager. Actually, he has no idea yet. But I think that it’s adorable if my daughter, son and husband dress alike, all dressed as cute Oompa Loompahs.

Can't Get Enough of Phelps

I'm writing a post about Michael Phelps--again. I just can't seem to get enough of him. Here are some facts about Michael Phelps, the Superfish.

- This swim sensation has just won his 11th Olympic gold medal, firmly placing him the history books.

- He was bullied as a kid.

- He swam a race with leaking goggles and won first place. not to mention making a world record.

- He was diagnosed with ADHD and placed on permanent medication.

- He asked his mom to stop his ADHD meds two years after the diagnosis and concentrated on swimming.

- He consumes 12,000 calories a day to fuel his punishing routine.

- He has size 14 feet aptly dubbed as flippers.

- His motto: If you sell yourself short, you'll never reach your full potential.

Inspiring words from an incredible, almost extraterrestial, Olympic champ.

Costa Rica, the perfect getaway

Costa Rica is the Spanish term for Rich Coast. It is very appropriately named as it is bordered by the Pacific Ocean to the West and South and the Caribbean Sea to the east. Costa Rica offers tourists a variety of landscapes and gentle tropical weather. This Central American location is the perfect getaway for that much-needed vacation.

If you’re that laidback beach bum or that adrenaline junkie, you will find something to do in Costa Rica. It’s diverse terrain means you can go hiking through a rain forest, climb a volcano, take a horseback ride through scenic trails, do wild water rafting, surf the waves, go snorkelling, kayaking, meet toucans, howler monkeys and other jungle critters or just chill out in the hot, sandy beach in the course of your vacation. It’s absolutely money well spent.

I definitely recommend checking out the Costa Rica Forum before booking your holiday. Aside from meeting people, you will get info on the best places, events and what to do. Get the most out of your vacation from surfing the Costa Rica Blogs. Who else will know more about Costa Rica than the locals?

The Michael Phelps Secret

Michael Phelps is the all over the news. With 5 gold medals and 5 world records in the Beijing Olympics, he is now considered to be the winningest Olympian.

He's vying for a historic 8-gold-medal feat that would beat the current record of swimmer Mark Spitz of 7 gold medals. But to get there Phelps has to swim 17 times over the course of nine days and win. His pace is really grueling.

What's his secret? Pizza and pasta. Yes, good ol' carbs.

I just got another reason to order pizza tonight!

Manila International Book Fair

The Manila International Book Fair will celebrate its 29th year of living in Words Without Borders. This 5-day event will happen on September 12-16, 2008 at the SMX Convention Center, Bay Area, Pasay City. The MIBF is considered to be the longest running event of its kind in Asia.

The MIBF will showcase a variety of books across all genres and will include more than 50
exhibitors. The goal is to champion the best of what Philippine publishing has to offer by making books more accesible and more affordable.

Aside from book hunting, other activities are also lined up to cater to everyone of any age, any taste and any means. Storytelling, poetry reading, meet and greet the authors, adults and kids writing workshops are just some of the activities awaiting the participants.

If you're looking for that hard-to-find book or just want to have fun, visit the Manila International Book Fair. See you there.

Thanks Ivan Girl for the information.

New7Wonders of Nature Campaign

Several Philippine destinations landed in the top 20 of the New7Wonders of Nature list. The sad news is that it is seeing a continual drop in the survey rankings since its launch on 07.07.07.

Tubbataha Reef and Chocolate Hills were once in the 2nd and 3rd place positions, while the Princesa Subterranean National Park has beaten India's River Ganges for 5th place, and Mayon Volcano bested Japan's Mount Fuji and was ranked 9th overall.

As of the latest tally, the Tubbataha reef now ranks eighth, the Chocolate Hills ninth, the Puerto Princesa Subterranean National Park 11th and the Mayon Volcano at 20th place.

Voting for nominees will continue until December 31, 2008. Only the top 21 finalists at the end of the first round will be announced on January 2009. Then a second year-long competition will be held to determine the top seven contenders and will be officially declared as the New7Wonders of Nature by the year 2010.

Let us all help in advocating the conservation of our natural resources and promote the best destinations in our country.

The search for the New7Wonders of Nature Campaign was organized by New7Wonders Foundation, a non-profit organization which has the express aim of undertaking documentation and conservation works of monuments worldwide under the motto: "OUR HERITAGE IS OUR FUTURE."

What's on the Menu?

In preparation for the Olympics, China has officially released a list of suggested English translations for Chinese dishes for the hungry tourist. This master list aims to help restaurants translate their menu from the awkward, downright strange English to the more palatable translation.

But not everyone agrees. Some think this is robbing a few dishes of its cultural heritage by taking away its literal translation and unintended humor.

So, what’s on the menu? Below is a list of quirky translated Chinese dishes and their new English version.

红烧狮子头: Braised Lion’s Head. Now aptly names as Stewed Pork Ball in Brown Sauce.
清蒸童子鸡: Chicken Without a Sexual Life. Poor chicken. Its new name is Steamed Spring Chicken.
夫妻肺片: Husband and Wife Lung Slices is now Pork Lungs in Chili Sauce. I wouldn’t eat that if I saw the old translation on the menu.
蚂蚁上树: Ants Climb Up a Tree is appropriately called Sautéed Vermicelli with Spicy Minced Pork.
怪味鸡丝: Strange Flavored Shredded Chicken is renamed Special Flavored Shredded Chicken. Who would want to eat something strange?
口水鸡: Saliva Chicken or Chicken which Causes You to Salivate is now Steamed Chicken with Chili Sauce.

So, anybody hungry?

One Happy Stamper

For our activity today, Kowi and I decided to try our hand at stamping. I just bought a small, inexpensive stamp kit with red ink from the bookstore.

First thing we did was to dress her in her "art" shirt. Kuya and Kowi have specific shirts they use for art and for eating spaghetti. It takes the stress out of washing the stains from their clothes since these special shirts are allowed to be stained. Next, I sat her on the table, opened the kit, gave her several pieces of paper and she was stamping away. I think that this is really good to develop her fine motor skills.

Short Article:

I've been a stay-at-home mom since January 2008, but I never knew that I could actually make money online. So my Internet has been primarily for checking emails and chatting. Last month, Melisse introduced me to the wonderful world of blogging. I resurrected an old blog and got hooked. Since then I've done several approved sponsored posts through this blog. And fairly recently, I have been writing online articles and getting paid. I also get home-based transcription work from time to time. A lot of wonderful money-making online opportunites have been opening up for me and I expect more to come for sure.

Please feel free to snag this. We all could use additional back links, right? Just give me a buzz and I'll update my list. Thanks and happy weekend.

Not At My Desk

Hi everyone. I'm staying over at my mom's house for the weekend. Their DSL connection has been a bit weird. It's been on and off a couple of times since I've been here. Actually, the whole family's annoyed. You see, my mom and brothers are online gamers and they're having a hard time levelling up with the Net connection on the fritz.

Yes, you read it right. My mom is a BIG time online gamer. Hehe. She started with Pangya, then Flyff and now, Cabal.

As soon as I come home, I'll be doing my rounds. I only have a limited time to update my blog, try to read other blogs and write my online articles. My mom comes over every five minutes and asks me if I'm done. Pressure, pressure.

To those who've asked for links exchange, I'll be linking you up as soon as I get home. Thanks.

Happy weekend everyone. My mom's here. Gotta go.
